For every hour, there is charcoal finished circular dot located near the central opening of the clock that makes it easier to tell the exact time.
Accurate, High-Torque battery-powered quartz movement which requires one AA battery to power the hands and one D-sized battery to power the moving gears. If you wish for the gears to be stationary, omit the "D" size battery.
