Setting your Tide Clock.
Since the moon moves relative to the earth so that it returns to the same position overhead after about 25 hours, there are 2 high and 2 low tides at any point every 25 hours (approximately 2 of each per day). Because the high tides stay more or less in line with the moon, it is as if the solid earth moved beneath the tidal bulges. When the moon is full or new, the gravitational pull of the moon and sun are combined. At these times, the high tides are very high and the low tides are very low. This is known as a spring high tide. During the moon's quarter phases the sun and moon work at right angles, causing the bulges to cancel each other. The result is a smaller difference between high and low tides and is known as a neap tide. Our Tide Clocks are designed to function for the Atlantic coast and averaged for the Mid- Atlantic. Check your tide chart or look them up online here . Set your tide clock to the table in your general area, then set the time on on the clock movement if so equipped, and now your tide clock will indicate the hours from to to High Tide and Low Tide on your Tide Clock.
