Quartz mantel clocks are practical as they are reasonably priced and never require winding. They are the most accurate and most do have a chime feature. Movements usually last about 20 years without maintenance except for changing the battery every year. Movement replacement is also very reasonable.
You may also turn the chime off, adjust the volume and many models offer a choice of chime melodies. Want to listen to the chimes? The chime samples on our site are the actual chimes that are played from the movement of the clocks. Always use Duracell brand batteries in a quartz mantel clock. These will last longer and even the chimes will sound better.
If you see a clock that offers a "Harmonic Movement", these are clocks with an incredible new chime system that sounds great!
Keywound Mantel clocks usually need to be wound about once a week and many refer to these as "8-day clocks" though they need to be wound once a week. Most have Keywound mantel clocks need to be wound weekly and have an acoustic chime by hammers that strike tuned rods inside the clock. Movements are made in Germany and these clocks will last generations if proper maintenance is performed. These Mantel clocks need oiling every few years and the movements should be cleaned at least every 10 years. The value of these clocks may increase over time if the clock is properly maintained and serviced. These are mechanical so you may need to adjust the time a little each week when you wind the clock.
The two most popular kinds of wood used to build the cases will be either Cherry or Oak. The most popular style is the tambour style. This style is where the top of the clock slopes up toward the center and back down again. View all of the tambour styles here. The carriage style (also known as a "bracket-style" is more of a square case with a handle on the top of the clock. The Barrister style clock will rectangular with an arched top. You may view all of the Barrister clocks here. Most of the tambour and the bracket styles may be found in both Cherry and Oak finishes. The Barrister style is more formal and is only made in Cherry finishes usually with some inlay or other design elements to create a more formal presentation.
