When do we put our clocks back

Congress changed the time that Daylight Saving Time would begin and end. While residents of most of the country once turned their clocks back an hour on the last Sunday in October, the date was changed two years ago to the first Sunday in November. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 also extended Daylight Saving Time on the front end, starting in 2007, to begin on the second Sunday in March.

A poll conducted by the U.S. Department of Transportation indicated that Americans liked Daylight Saving Time because “there is more light in the evenings / can do more in the evenings.” Although a 1976 report by the National Bureau of Standards disputed the 1975 U.S. Department of Transportation study, and found that DST-related energy savings were insignificant, the DOT study continued to influence decisions about Daylight Saving Time. So..when do we put our clocks back or forward?

When do we turn our clocks back

  • FALL – first Sunday in November
  • SPRING – second Sunday in March – FORWARD

Most of the United States begins Daylight Saving Time at 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday in March and reverts to standard time on the first Sunday in November. In the U.S., each time zone switches at a different time.

Atomic Clocks

Atomic Clocks set themselves by listening for the radio signals of the NIST Atomic Clock in Fort Collins, Colorado.

As soon as the Atomic Clock catches the signal, the hands will spin at 20 times their normal rate, and the time is adjusted to accuracy with less than a one-second deviation in one million years. These clocks do not need to be set when DST changes…they will do it for your automatically!
